Optimizing VALORANT for smoother gameplay and fixing lag issues in 2023 involves a combination of in-game settings adjustments and system optimizations. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you achieve better performance:

1. Update Graphics Drivers:

Ensure your graphics drivers are up-to-date. Visit the website of your GPU manufacturer (NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel) to download and install the latest drivers.

2. VALORANT In-Game Settings:

Graphics Quality: Set it to the lowest or medium preset if you're experiencing lag. You can gradually increase settings based on your system's performance.

Display Mode: Use Fullscreen for the best performance. Borderless Window and Windowed modes may introduce input lag.

Resolution: Choose the native resolution of your monitor for the best visual quality. Lower resolutions can boost performance but may look less sharp.

Frame Rate Limit: Set a reasonable frame rate cap (e.g., 144 FPS) that matches your monitor's refresh rate. This can help reduce GPU load.

V-Sync: Disable V-Sync to reduce input lag, but be aware of screen tearing. If tearing is an issue, consider using an in-game frame limiter instead.

Anti-Aliasing: Lower or disable anti-aliasing settings to improve performance. FXAA is generally less demanding than MSAA.

Texture Quality: Set to Medium or Low if you have limited VRAM. Higher settings may lead to stuttering on lower-end GPUs.

Shadow Quality: Lower shadow quality to the minimum settings for a significant performance boost.

Multithreaded Rendering: Enable this option to take advantage of multi-core CPUs for better performance.

3. Windows Optimizations:

Game Mode: In Windows 10/11, enable Game Mode to prioritize system resources for gaming. To do this, go to Settings > Gaming > Game Mode and toggle it on.

High-Performance Power Plan: Set your power plan to High-Performance in Windows settings (Control Panel > Power Options) to ensure your CPU and GPU run at maximum performance.

Background Applications: Close unnecessary background applications, including browsers, software updaters, and resource-intensive applications.

4. System Hardware:

Ensure your system meets or exceeds VALORANT's system requirements. VALORANT is not very demanding, but a capable CPU and GPU are essential for smooth gameplay.
5. Network Optimization:

Use a wired Ethernet connection instead of Wi-Fi for lower latency and more stable connectivity.

Ensure that background downloads and streaming services are not using up your network bandwidth while gaming.

6. Disable Full-Screen Optimizations:

Right-click the VALORANT shortcut or executable, go to Properties, and under the Compatibility tab, check "Disable fullscreen optimizations." This can reduce input lag.
7. Launch Options (Advanced):

Right-click VALORANT in your game library, go to Properties > Set Launch Options, and consider adding "-high" to allocate higher CPU priority to the game.
8. Check for Software Conflicts:

Disable or close any software that might conflict with VALORANT, such as screen recording or overlay apps.
9. VALORANT Config File Tweaks:

Navigate to "C:\Users<Your Username>\Documents\My Games\VALORANT\VALORANT<Long String of Numbers and Letters>\Config."

Open the "GameUserSettings.ini" file with a text editor (like Notepad) and tweak settings like ResolutionQuality, ViewDistance, and ShadowQuality manually to further fine-tune performance. Make sure to create backups of the file before making changes.

10. Update Operating System:

Ensure your Windows operating system is up to date with the latest updates and patches.
11. Keep VALORANT Updated:

Regularly update VALORANT to the latest version, as developers often release performance optimizations and bug fixes.
After making these adjustments, regularly monitor your in-game performance and tweak settings as needed to find the right balance between visual quality and performance for your specific system.
